Well sundays perch trip failed to materialise due to Claire having a stinking cold so I got back into bed after turning the alarm of at 5.30, the frost looked hard anyway! When we finally got out we arrived at crf around 11.45 to find only two other anglers on,it was good to catch up with angling legend SK in the car park who had arrived minutes earlier, we settled in the disabled swim and set up.
No brolley today as weather was bearable for a change, I opted for an evolution maggot ball on one rod and a decent size pva sack of maggots pulled through the rig, and put it in the rh margin,a spot known to a few regulars, however there was a lot of leaf matter in the edge so I placed it about 4ft from the marginal bushes, the second rod i had 3grains of pop up corn on a small gravelly area just before the outlet pipe. Both well proven spots at almost any time of year, almost........
We sat in virtual silence except for the usual text banter from SK and a solitary liner on the maggot rod, it was proper quiet. The angler pole fishing in the next swim with double red maggot had been there all day and failed to connect with anything so hope was fading fast, as were my maggot supply, the local robins were out in force and it was nice being sat there feeding the anglers favourite.
A friend once said to me that robins are friends and loved ones that have passed on coming back to say hello, and this thought makes me smile and also a little sad...... we sat there till 4 pm when we decided it was not going to happen, and as I got up to wind in the corn rod a good fish rolled in open water amongst some leaf matter. We packed up the trusty old van and on the way home decided that was our last carp trip of the year, perch will be our quarry now, perhaps even a pike or two, so until the next outing, tight lines and keep warm!
